Fireplaces

The warmth everyone gathers toward, framed in stone that holds the eye long after the fire has gone out.

A fireplace is the one surface in a room that everyone looks at. We build surrounds, hearths and full-height cladding in stone chosen for its veining, so the pattern runs the way you want it to.

Book-matched slabs, mitred edges and heat-appropriate materials — we will tell you honestly which stones suit a working fireplace and which are better kept decorative.

The focal point

The one surface everyone in the room looks at

A fireplace is not a work surface, so the rules change: veining matters more than durability, and the pattern has to be read across the whole wall before anything is cut.

How we build it

Book-matched slabs and mitred edges

Surrounds, hearths and full-height cladding. Book-matching mirrors two slabs so the veining opens outward from the centre — the effect that makes a fireplace look designed rather than clad.

We will also tell you honestly which stones suit a working fireplace and which are better kept decorative.

Good to know

Fireplaces in Michigan — FAQ

Which stone can handle a working fireplace?

Granite and porcelain handle heat well. Marble is usually fine on surrounds that sit away from direct flame, but we will assess your specific setup before recommending it.

What is book-matching?

Two slabs cut from the same block are opened like a book, so the veining mirrors across the joint. It needs slabs bought as a pair, so it has to be planned from the start.

Can you clad the full wall, not just the surround?

Yes. Full-height cladding is one of the most striking things you can do with stone — send us photos and dimensions and we will tell you what it takes.
